ERG mode
ERG mode is a smart-trainer setting that holds a target power, in watts, no matter how fast you pedal or which gear you're in. The trainer adjusts the resistance so you produce exactly the power the workout asks for.
How it works
If you slow your cadence, the trainer adds resistance; if you speed up, it eases off — keeping power constant. Your training app tells the trainer the target for each interval, so a structured workout runs itself.
When to switch it off
ERG mode is ideal for steady intervals. For sprints, or if your cadence collapses at the end of a hard interval (the 'spiral of death'), switch to resistance or simulation mode. Shifting to an easier gear before a hard interval also helps the trainer respond smoothly.
In The Next Race
The Next Race controls your smart trainer in ERG mode and holds each interval's target power, set from your FTP.
