The Course

Challenge Roth begins with a swim in the Main-Donau-Kanal (Rhine-Main-Danube Canal), a straight, calm waterway that makes for fast swim times. The canal's banks are lined with cheering spectators, creating an atmosphere more reminiscent of a stadium event than a typical open-water swim.

The 112-mile bike course loops through the rolling Bavarian countryside, passing through picturesque villages where entire communities turn out to cheer. The terrain is moderately hilly with a total climb of roughly 1,300 meters, featuring the famous Solar Hill, where up to 30,000 spectators create a wall of noise that rivals any Tour de France mountain stage. The bike course is fast enough that multiple long-distance world records have been set at Roth.

The marathon run follows an out-and-back course along the canal and through the streets of Roth. The flat canal path allows for fast running, while the village streets provide continuous crowd support. The finish in the town center of Roth, with the entire community celebrating into the night, is widely considered the greatest finish-line atmosphere in long-distance triathlon.

History

Challenge Roth traces its origins to 1984 when it was known as the Franken Triathlon. It later became an Ironman-branded event before switching to the Challenge Family in 2002. Under the Challenge brand, Roth has flourished into the world's largest full-distance triathlon.

The race has produced numerous world-best times at the long-distance, including Jan Frodeno's iconic 7:35:39 in 2016. The Bavarian community's embrace of the event is unmatched, with an estimated 300,000 spectators lining the course each year, making it a true sporting festival.
