The Course
The Noosa Triathlon begins with a 1.5-kilometer ocean swim at Noosa Main Beach, a sheltered north-facing beach with typically calm conditions. The clear, warm waters of Laguna Bay make for one of the most enjoyable swim legs in triathlon, though occasional swells can add challenge.
The 40-kilometer bike course heads inland through the Noosa hinterland on rolling roads surrounded by subtropical rainforest and farmland. The terrain features some moderate climbs but nothing extreme, making it accessible while still testing bike fitness. The roads are well-maintained and the course is well-marshaled.
The 10-kilometer run takes athletes along the Noosa River, through Noosa Junction, and into Noosa National Park before finishing on Hastings Street, the town's vibrant main strip. The combination of coastal and parkland running, warm weather, and enthusiastic crowds makes the run a highlight. The post-race atmosphere on Hastings Street, with cafes, restaurants, and a celebratory festival, is quintessentially Australian.
History
The Noosa Triathlon was first held in 1983 and has grown into Australia's largest and most celebrated triathlon. It now attracts over 8,000 participants across multiple race categories and has become the centerpiece of the annual Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival.
The race has launched the careers of many Australian professional triathletes and is a rite of passage for age-group triathletes across the country. The Sunshine Coast location and festival atmosphere have made it as much a social event as a sporting one.
How to Train for Noosa Tri
Practice ocean swimming
While Noosa Main Beach is sheltered, ocean conditions can change. Practice swimming in open water with surf entries and exits. Familiarize yourself with sighting techniques for the swim buoys.
Train in warm conditions
Late October in Noosa brings warm temperatures and humidity. Ensure your training includes hot-weather sessions, and practice your hydration strategy for the bike and run. Overheating on the run is a common issue for underprepared athletes.
Arrive early for the festival
The Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival spans several days. Arriving early allows you to acclimatize to conditions, familiarize yourself with transitions, and enjoy the festival atmosphere without race-day stress.
