Triathlon transition (T1 and T2)

In triathlon, transitions are the changeovers between disciplines: T1 from swim to bike and T2 from bike to run. They take place in the transition area, and the time spent there counts towards your overall race time.

What happens in T1 and T2

In T1 you take off your wetsuit, goggles and cap, put on your helmet — fastened before you touch the bike — and run your bike to the mount line. In T2 you rack the bike, take off your helmet, change into running shoes and head out. Rules on where you can mount and dismount are strict.

How to get faster

Lay out kit in the order you'll use it, use elastic laces, and rehearse the sequence at home and in brick sessions. Walk the transition area before the start so you know your route in and out. Calm and methodical usually beats frantic.
